Mobile intarwebingz!

I have restarted my quest to be able to post photos and text from my phone. most recently I discovered a plugin by Andy Moore that makes your site mobile browser friendly without having to build another version of your site.

Seatowngrrl on Mobile Browser
As you can see, its easily navigable from your standard t9 phone AND what is exciting is that I can post from this page as well. I was able to post through this interface from The Boy’s phone, but my phone kept hanging and not putting the post through so I need to see if I there is some sort of setting or something on my phone that i can change to fix that.

On the Dashboard side of things, in the Options section you can change several settings so it seems (to me) pretty nicely integrated into WordPress.

It has been cool working with this. Originally there were add links in the header and the footer but I took them out because I felt they were a distracting for the amount of screen realestate on your average cell phone screen. Additionally I have changed the color scheme a little. I am still figuring out what parts of the code change what so the snapshot above will be a little different from the final product, but I am generally happy with this color scheme.

I can’t say enough how much I like working with wordpress. If you want some functionality chances are someone else has figured out how to do it. And then when you find a plug in or a theme most of the time it is totally ok to modify the fuck out if it, so if it generally does what you want it to do, but you want it to customize it to fit your needs then you can (assuming you have the patience to figure out what affects what, or are more skilled than I am)
So Exciting!

Has anyone else out there worked with this plugin, or found other mobile intarwebbin’ tools?

Mixed Student Resources (DONE! (finaly))

Today the last piece of the puzzle came together.  I had made the Mixed Student Resources site from an html template that I downloaded and then converted it to a wordpress/PHP format.  I found this great tutorial at UrbanGiraffe.com which I used to strip down a wordpress theme and then add in the style from the html theme.  From there I modified the theme to get it to flow the way I wanted and over all things were good.  However I always had one little problem.  On the individual posts, if the actual text of the post was shorter than the sidebar, the background would not meet the footer.  And weirder yet in only happened in Fire Fox.  So a while after I got to that point i posted a comment on the UrbanGiraffe tutorial about my problem.

Today was the day baby!  I checked my email this morning (from my phone of course) and noticed an email from the sites author and he had a fix for me.  Of course it was something so easy, a tiny little line of code that just made it all better.

I love the internet.  You can learn new things, and connect with people that you may never meet.  I really appreciate his help.  They say the web divides people, that it makes us have less social interaction, but I say that it allows us access to other people we wound not have had access to before and allows us to connect on a grander scale.

YeaY Interweb.

A Journey into WordPress

So like any good blossoming geek, I have started a few blogs. I have my art blog which at the moment has sort of been on the back burner until I start doing more art. I have this blog which is supposed to be my personal catch all subjects kind of blog, and then I have the Mixed Student Resources site, which is sort of a hybrid (excuse the pun) blog in the sense that it really is more of a web site that I am building using WordPress. I had originally downloaded an HTML template from the Open Source Web Design site which I really liked. The color was great and it used CSS which I have come to find is REALLY helpful. Before CSS if I wanted to make a site wide change I had to go to each page and if you have a lot of pages, well there goes your Friday night. Who am I kidding, if you are doing that for fun you probably didn’t have much of a Friday night planned.

Anyway, this template was really great. But then I discovered the magic of WordPress. WordPress is an open source blogging tool. If you don’t already have a domain and hosting you can get a free account from them which looks like www.yourdomain.wordpress.com. They have lots of different templates you can choose from and you have some degree of flexibility in how you set it up. However I already had a domain (several in fact) so I was able to install the software and use it as part of my site without the wordpress.com at the end. For those who are able, this option offers all the freedom and flexibility you could want. (more…)
